Choosing Cuban Cigar for the Right Age
By: Gary Cigaros
A Cuban cigar is not like a fruit or vegetable or bread which tastes the best when taken fresh. A Cuban cigar is not at its best right after it has been made, but it tends to get better as time passes on. You should know that the very tobacco which is used to make a good Cuban cigar is probably aged for a year or two before being actually blended into the Cuban cigar. A humidor is a device that is used to preserve the Cuban cigars in correct temperature and humidity in order to retain its quality while improving upon the flavor. The condition within the humidor should at all times be maintained under the 70-70 rule which states that both the temperature and the humidity remain close to 70 at all times to make sure that the Cuban cigars do not dry out or decay from excess or lack of any of the two necessary conditions.
A good quality Cuban cigar will always be a good quality cigar irrespective of the fact whether it is aged or not. The difference between a vintage Cuban cigar and a 'fresh' Cuban cigar is that the vintage Cuban cigar will taste different when you smoke it due to the light changes that it has undergone during the aging process. The delicate changes that occur within a well-aged Cuban cigar are something that Cuban cigar lovers love to enjoy and cherish. It is due to this reason that vintage Cuban cigars cost more and are choices the only choices of some the upper class socialites.
A Cuban cigar may not come to any sort of harm for a very long period if stored under the proper conditions and taken well care of, but, if it is not stored following the 70-70 rule strictly, then depreciation in quality could occur. If the humidity level drops where the Cuban cigars are stored, then you may actually find that the Cuban cigars have somewhat dried up. If you are careful enough to spot this early, then the Cuban cigars can still be saved. Take your time and humidify the Cuban cigars again by placing them back into a good quality humidor and providing the adequate temperatures necessary for the process. Although there might be little changes in the overall quality even if you manage to save the Cuban cigars, but they should not be of a great proportion. If however, your Cuban cigars have begun to rot due to excess heat and humidity, then the poor Cuban cigars are probably beyond help.
The choice between the vintage Cuban cigars and comparatively fresher Cuban cigars is not exactly of quality, but rather of personal choice and preference. There is not a great deal of difference between the quality of a 'fresh' Cuban cigar and an 'old' Cuban cigar, but the subtle variations takes the vintage Cuban cigars a step ahead and also the prestige associated with it increases the price tag, just like an aged wine.
